Correggio, 1939. Leonarda Cianciulli had buried almost all her children, and a fortune teller foretold that she would lose the ones she had left too. To prevent it, she killed three neighbors. With their bodies, she made bars of soap and some tea biscuits that she offered to visitors.

She went down in history as the soap-maker of Correggio, the first serial killer in Italy. Spiritica does not tell her story with blood: it tells it with what was in her kitchen.

Fantôme de Maules

For years, anyone walking through the Maules forest in Switzerland could come across Le Loyon: a figure in a gas mask and military jumpsuit who walked among the trees without saying a word.

In 2013, someone took a photo of him and the forest filled with curious onlookers. Soon after, his cloak and mask appeared in the undergrowth, along with a note titled “Death Certificate and Will of the Ghost of Maules.” No one ever knew who he was. Stora Skuggan bottled the forest where he was hiding.

Lady White Snake

A white snake meditates for a thousand years by West Lake in Hangzhou until it takes human form. It falls in love with a mortal whom it meets on a rainy day, when he lends it his umbrella. A monk discovers what it is and locks it beneath Leifeng Pagoda.

It is one of the four great Chinese folk legends. When the pagoda collapsed in 1924, some said they had finally let her out.

Hermann by my side seemed like a shadow

The name is a line from Victor Hugo: «Hermann, by my side, seemed like a shadow». Two horsemen cross a forest at night, and one of them can’t stop thinking about the dead.

Quentin Bisch translated it with geosmin, the molecule that smells like earth just after the rain, alongside incense and rose. It is the scent of someone who stays with you even when you can’t see them.

Silphium

In Cyrene, in present-day Libya, grew a plant that the Romans paid for at silver prices. It was seasoning, perfume, and medicine, and the city stamped it on its coins. No one managed to cultivate it, so they harvested it until none was left.

According to Pliny the Elder, the last stalk was given to Nero. Stora Skuggan imagines what a plant that no one has smelled in nearly two thousand years must have smelled like.

Moonlight Ceremony

There are things you only do under a full moon: light resin, make tea, open the window, and wait.

Moonlight Ceremony smells like that night. Frankincense and opoponax, the resins burned in temples for millennia, with smoky black tea and birch tar. A private ritual that lingers on the skin until morning.

A poison to sip. Stéphane Humbert Lucas conceived it as a love potion: a bite that doesn't hurt and isn't forgotten.

Red like a wild strawberry or like what drips after the bite, with blackberry, amber and leather. For vampires with good manners.

Sécrétions Magnifiques

In 2006 Etat Libre d'Orange did what no house dared to do: a perfume that smells like a body. Blood, milk, sweat, and salt, with a metallic accord that many people can't stand for more than a minute.

Nearly twenty years later, it is still the most discussed perfume in niche perfumery. Whoever loves it wears nothing else.

David-Lev Jipa-Slivinschi studied screenwriting before perfumery and writes his fragrances like films. Inexcusable Evil is his response to war: it opens with gunpowder, ozone, and blood, continues with bandages and iodine, and ends in burned flowers.

It is not a perfume to be liked; it is a perfume to be remembered. The brand sums it up in a phrase: hate all wars, love people.

Tony Iommi Deified

At 17, on his last day in a sheet metal factory, Tony Iommi lost the tips of two fingers on the hand he used to fret the strings. He made himself some molded plastic fingertips and kept playing, with the strings detuned so it hurt less.

That deep, dark sound ended up in a band that took its name from a Boris Karloff horror film: Black Sabbath. That’s how heavy metal was born. Xerjoff turns it into leather, rose, and spices.
